Crazy Robot Zombie Golf Madness, 2007

This multimedia video installation is a golf simulator, complete with putting green, golf clubs, and golf balls. Audience members can play golf inside the freight container, shooting balls at a backdrop that is also a backlit video screen. Video footage of landscapes rapidly moving by (similar in look and feel to the movie Koyaniquatsi) is projected on the screen.

As golf balls are hit into the screen, a motion sensor (a hacked Nintendo Wii controller) records the golf cub’s movement and transmits it to a computer running video mixing software ”Isadora”, a commercially available software program that slows the footage down in real time. The more rapidly the “golfer” hits ball into the screen, the slower the landscapes move. Golf players are left with a feeling of sludgy violence, as the more aggressively they play the slower the world becomes.

For safety reasons, the inside of the freight container is lined with padding, fixed to the metal wall of the container using 20lb. magnets so no drilling is required. Any missed shots will be absorbed by the padding to prevent rebounds.
